So it will definitely take longer than one afternoon.
In fact, we took full advantage of the sunny day today – collecting a new LPG bottle, hand truck and line trimmer, and then heading off to the section to stage our attack. After four hours, Rob had mowed down the all of the grass on the slope… and I had burned off just this one little bit:
That’s not even 1/4 of the area that we need to have cleared.
The problem is that the grass is very wet, so it smokes a lot but takes a long time to wither and die down. It’s easier now that he’s mown it shorter, but it’s still a very time-consuming activity.
After that short break, the weather is back to strong winds and rain tonight, and it’s meant to continue like this tomorrow. I’m guessing that would mean that more burning tomorrow will be even more futile. However, I’ve got another short week ahead so I’ll probably just keep the burner and a change of clothes in the back of my car so that I can leave work early and take advantage of any more sunny afternoons that come our way. There’s a lot left to do, and the winter weather will likely only get worse.
The good news is that Rob and I finished our back-aching labour by sharing fish & chips in the car as the sun went down. It was a lovely date night, and such a nice thing to have spent the afternoon working on our place together.
