Low Hanging Fruit

One hour. One hour until my alarm goes off and I have to start getting ready for work. Conferences.

Yes, I fell asleep on the couch again. Even though we did a lot of physical work building the shed yesterday, I haven’t been sleeping well lately. Five or six hours a night. Not enough to be insomnia, but enough to make me fall asleep on the couch at 9:30pm… And wake up at 3:30am. For no reason.

I do wish there was a way to reset that pattern and get my brain to stay asleep. Perhaps the answer is a lot of wine.

In the meantime, I am flicking through various news sites, reading about the US elections, reading about the lack of a Wikileaks reveal, and reading the truly important news about Jamie Oliver apparently fucking up paella. Sadly I can’t think of any iconic New Zealand dishes that a foreign chef could fuck up. Cheese rolls maybe? Pavlova? Actually it’s really easy to fuck up a pavlova. It’s like making a souffle – you lose more than you win. But the list of ingredients is very simple. Just don’t top it with anything other than whipped cream, berries or kiwifruit (or passionfruit in a pinch), and you’ll be fine. It’s almost strictly a summer dessert.

Ah, summer. It’s only October and I’m already starting to pine for Christmastime. Strawberries. Barbecues on the beach. Rose wine while sitting in the garden.

Perhaps my body is telling me the answer to my not-insomnia after all. Lots and lots of wine…
